How to Resize Signature for PAN Card / NSDL
Published: June 10, 2025 • 4 min read • RealImageTool
One of the trickiest parts of applying for a PAN card online is getting the signature in the right format. The NSDL and UTIITSL portals require a signature in JPG format, maximum 10KB, with specific dimensions. This guide walks you through the entire process.
NSDL Signature Requirements
| Parameter | Requirement |
| Format | JPG / JPEG |
| Maximum file size | 10 KB |
| Dimensions | Approx. 2cm x 4.5cm (width x height) |
| Background | White paper |
| Ink | Black or dark blue ball pen |
Step 1: Create Your Signature Image
You have two options to get your signature as an image file:
Option A: Using a Smartphone
- Take a plain white A4 paper
- Sign in the center using a black or blue ball pen
- Place the paper on a flat surface with good lighting
- Photograph just the signature — crop tightly around it in your phone's gallery app
- Save as JPG
Option B: Using a Scanner
- Sign on white paper
- Scan at 100-200 DPI
- Save as JPG (not PNG or TIFF)
- Crop tightly to just the signature area
Step 2: Resize to 10KB Using RealImageTool
- Open the Photo & Signature Resizer
- Upload your signature image
- Click the "10 KB" preset button
- Click "Resize to Target KB"
- Check the result — it should show "Result: ~9-10 KB"
- Click "Download Result"
Tips for a Good Signature Image
- Use black ink: Black ink shows better contrast against white paper, resulting in a cleaner image even at 10KB.
- Clean background: Make sure the paper is clean with no smudges, lines, or ruled lines showing.
- Crop tight: Crop the image to show only the signature with a small white border. Extra white space wastes precious KB allowance.
- Not too small: The signature should still be legible at the NSDL portal's display size.
- Natural signature: Use your regular signature — the one on your bank documents. Forged-looking signatures may be flagged.
Why Is My Signature File Still Too Large?
If after resizing your file is still over 10KB, here are some things to try:
- Make sure you selected "JPG" output format, not PNG (PNG is larger)
- Crop the image more tightly around the signature before uploading
- Try entering 9 in the custom KB field to target exactly 9KB
- If the signature is on ruled paper, retake the photo on plain white paper
Can I upload a digital signature (typed in a font)?
No. NSDL and UTIITSL require a handwritten signature. A typed signature in a cursive font is not acceptable.
My signature looks blurry at 10KB — will NSDL accept it?
Some softening is expected at 10KB. As long as the signature is clearly legible and clearly yours, it will be accepted. NSDL checks that the signature matches your ID documents, not pixel-perfect quality.
